ISTD Jazz Awards
Jazz dance is taught using the ISTD Jazz awards syllabus, bronze, silver and gold. This class is designed to build on the technique learned in Modern Theatre dance, developing the dancers' sense of performance. These classes are fun and energetic and are suitable for dancers extending their modern technique as well as newcomers and late starters. The awards are levelled as bronze, silver and gold and students who show enthusiasm and good progression with technique are offered the chance to take exams for these awards. Exams are not compulsory but silver and gold can only be taken after passing the bronze jazz award or Intermediate modern. The aims of the jazz awards are:

● to learn and develop jazz dance techniques
● to improve co-ordination, balance, flexibility and strength
● to promote awareness of the body in space
● to develop a range of different styles and performance skills
● to develop musicality and rhythm
● to gain confidence through performance and have fun

Entry Levels
Please note there is limited number of participants per class. All new applicants will be added to a class waiting list and we will be in contact as soon as a place becomes available. Once a space becomes available in a suitable class, we will be in contact to offer a free trial session in an available class. No preparation is needed for the trial session which will take place in a normal weekly class. The trial is mainly to check that we have allocated your child to the correct level of class, and to also ensure that your child and their teacher are happy before committing.

ISTD Modern
The ISTD created their syllabus in 1932 and are continually changing and updating their syllabus. Through their carefully planned and well-tried examination syllabus, which combines modern dance, jazz and other dance styles, young people are trained to become disciplined and versatile dancers. Modern offers students the fast paced, energetic and fun style of dance that develops strength, flexibility, endurance and coordination with free work. Classes are offered from age 5yrs and enter examinations from Grade 1 upwards.

The examination structure of the ISTD is designed to cater equally for those who wish to progress to making dance their profession, either as a performer or dance teacher, and for those pursuing dance purely as a leisure activity. The teaching qualifications are structured to give the new teacher the best possible foundation from which to work, with a particular emphasis on safe dance practice and the needs of the growing child. ISTD provides syllabus outlines for examinations for children aged 5 years or over (primary-grade 6) and for adults and professionals (intermediate foundation, intermediate, advanced 1 & 2). All titles awarded by the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing are internationally recognized.

Modern Jazz
Modern Lyrical
Modern Theatre
Modern Jazz
Jazz dance, although it often has a formal choreographic basis, is strongly emotional and improvisational. The way a jazz dancer reacts to the music or to the narrative in one performance will likely be different from her reaction in another, simply because her emotional response, which arises at the moment, will never be quite the same twice.

Modern Lyrical
Lyrical dancers often perform to music with lyrics. The lyrics of the chosen song serve as inspiration for the dancers' movements and expressions. Music used for lyrical dance is typically emotionally charged and expressive. The musical genres used in lyrical dance include pop, rock, blues, hip-hop, ethnic and world music and different forms of "downtown" contemporary music, such as minimalism.

Modern Theatre
Modern Theatre dance is a rhythmic dance style which originated in America before travelling to the rest of the world. It is often seen on the stages of musical productions and is known for its theatrical qualities. The style uses travelling steps, high kicks, leaps, and turns which all need strength and flexibility.

What To Wear
Students are requested to arrive for their class with the uniform appropriate to their grade or level. Female students should have their hair neatly tied back and students in Grades 1 and up should have their hair in a bun. In the interests of health and safety and safe dance practice, jewellery must not be worn, unless for religious or cultural reasons. If it is a students’ first class or trial class they are not expected to wear uniform and can wear something that they can move in easily. If prospective students do not have a leotard and skirt, they can wear leggings and a t-shirt or skirt and bare feet.
